One of the best things anyone can do when it comes to their health is to ask questions of their healthcare provider. With Maryland legalizing medical cannabis in 2013, the topic is still a relatively new reality for many. So, we’re happy to address concerns and help patients feel more informed. We encourage those who call or visit our office to ask away! Here are six of the most frequently asked questions we receive at New Era Wellness:
1. Are you [Myrtis Agen-Davis] a doctor? I’m not a doctor. I’m a family nurse practitioner, which means that I’ve received extensive clinical training in family practice medicine. That training makes me licensed to monitor the wellness of people of all ages.
2. Why did you get into the medical marijuana field? If you have a chronic qualifying condition that you’ve experienced for more than 3 months, it is likely that you will qualify. Of course, all potential medical marijuana patients need to be evaluated to receive an official recommendation.
3. Do I qualify for Maryland’s medical marijuana card? If you have a chronic qualifying condition that you’ve experienced for more than 3 months, it is likely that you will qualify. Of course, all potential medical marijuana patients need to be evaluated to receive an official recommendation.
4. How soon can I get my medical marijuana card? Getting a medical cannabis card in Maryland can take anywhere from 10 to 45 days. In our experience, it typically takes about 9 days. The key is to submit a complete application by following application instructions listed on the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission website. For assistance with the application, you can make an appointment to visit our office.
5. When do I need to return to your office? You’ll need to return one year from the date of certification for renewal.

You would also need to return if there are changes in your health or medications. Patients can receive an increase or decrease in their medical marijuana prescription for a renewal fee.
6. Will I always want to eat (“have the munchies”) if I use medical marijuana? If you are concerned that consuming medical cannabis could increase your appetite, there are specific cannabinoids and terpenes one can use to assist in suppressing the appetite. THCv (cannabinoid) or Humulene (terpene) from your local dispensary are two great options to begin with when exploring what works for you.
